The incident occurred in Dutchess County at 11 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, near the Speedway gas station on Route 9 in Hyde Park.
Authorities identified Monica R. Deyo, from Hyde Park, lying in the roadway with severe, life-threatening injuries.
"Despite extensive efforts to administer life-saving measures, she was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene," Benson said.
Preliminary findings indicate that Deyo was standing on the back pegs of a bicycle traveling across Route 9 from east to west. At some point, Benson said she fell or jumped off the bike.
A 2023 Subaru Outback, driven by a 39-year-old man from Houston, Texas, swerved in an attempt to avoid the bicycle in the roadway but struck Deyo.
According to Hyde Park Police Chief Robert Benson, the driver, who sustained no injuries, remained on the scene and fully cooperated with investigators.
This case is still under active investigation, with assistance from the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit.
"We extend our deepest condolences to Ms. Deyo’s family and loved ones during this difficult time," the chief added.
